Banganga Fair
Location: | Radha - Krishna Ji Temple near a rivulet which is 11 kms away from Bairath in the district of Jaipur, Rajasthan. Bairath is 85 kms away from Jaipur. |
Significance: | It is believed that bathing with the holy waters of Banganga on this day purifies one's soul. |
Time of Celebration: | Vaishakh Purnima (the full moon day, according to the Hindu calendar), that generally falls in April or May. |
It is said that the stream of Banganga was formed
when Arjun, one of the Pandavas, shot an arrow to quench the thirst of
dying Bhishma Pitamah, who was a brave warrior and had been badly
wounded in the battle of Mahabharata. Shri Nandram Bakshi of Jaipur
built the 200-year old Radha-Krishnaji Temple. Thousands of pilgrims
come from other places such as Alwar, Behror, Jaipur and Bharatpur, to
bathe in sacred waters and pay homage to the holy sites nearby such as
shrines of Hanuman and Ganga Bihari, the Mahadev Temple and the Math of
Goswamiji. There are tradesmen who come here to sell simple rural
ornaments, toys and household items and Giant Wheels and Merry-Go-Rounds
attract the children.
